Cohen's d is calculated by dividing the absolute difference between two group means by the standard deviation: $$d = \frac{|M_1 - M_2|}{SD}$$. To ensure the resulting effect size is positive, researchers typically designate the larger mean as $$M_1$$ and the smaller as $$M_2$$, or they simply use the absolute difference in the numerator.

In psychological research, standard guidelines help researchers interpret the magnitude of Cohen's d effect sizes. An effect size near $$0.20$$ is considered a small difference, a value near $$0.50$$ indicates a medium difference, and a value of $$0.80$$ or higher represents a large difference between group means.

Interpreting Cohen's d

The gender similarities hypothesis argues that men and women are fundamentally similar across the vast majority of psychological variables. Based on reviews of effect sizes, researchers have found that while large differences exist in a few specific areas, most psychological sex differences yield a Cohen's d of less than $$0.10$$, representing a trivial difference.
