Semantic encoding is the process of committing words and their meanings to memory. This form of encoding was first demonstrated in a 1935 experiment by William Bousfield, which showed that people tend to organize learned words based on their semantic categories during recall.

Visual encoding is the process of converting images into memory. This process is particularly effective for concrete, high-imagery words (e.g., 'car', 'dog') because they can be encoded both visually, as mental pictures, and semantically, by their meaning. This dual encoding creates a stronger memory trace compared to abstract, low-imagery words (e.g., 'truth', 'value'), which are harder to visualize.

Acoustic encoding is the process of converting sounds into memory, with a particular emphasis on the sounds that make up words.

In a 1975 study, psychologists Fergus Craik and Endel Tulving investigated which type of encoding results in the best memory for verbal information. In their experiment, participants were shown words and asked questions designed to engage one of three processing levels. Visual processing was prompted by questions about the physical appearance of the letters (e.g., font), acoustic processing by questions about the word's sound (e.g., rhyming), and semantic processing by questions about the word's meaning. Afterward, participants were given a surprise recall or recognition test for the words.

Types of Encoding

Encoding failure is a form of memory loss that occurs when information is not properly stored in memory from the outset. Essentially, one cannot recall information that was never successfully encoded. This is analogous to attempting to access a book on an e-reader that was never downloaded. This type of failure often happens because we do not pay close attention to details or engage in the effortful processing required to commit information to long-term memory.

Encoding Failure

The self-reference effect is a memory-enhancing strategy where individuals make the material they are trying to memorize personally meaningful. By rewriting definitions in their own words, relating concepts to previous learning, or applying them to their own lives, learners build a web of retrieval cues that facilitates access to the information later. This effect acts as an especially beneficial form of elaborative rehearsal.

Following the initial encoding of information, the brain must retain it through a process called storage. Storage involves creating a permanent record of the encoded information, effectively preserving it within the memory system for future use.
