Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder is categorized as isolated (idiopathic) when the condition arises spontaneously without a primary cause. Individuals with this type of disorder develop a neurodegenerative disease, such as Lewy body dementia, multiple system atrophy, or Parkinson’s disease within ten to fifteen years of diagnosis.

Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder is categorized as symptomatic (secondary) when the condition arises due to an underlying disorder, such as Type 1 narcolepsy.
