Trust Violation Experimental Scenarios

In a study examining the neuroscience of trust violations (van der Werff et al., 2023), three types of experimental scenarios (ability, benevolence, and integrity) were presented to participants via pre-recorded audio to simulate live interactions. Each scenario began with a shared introductory conversation:

  • Audio: Knock on door.
  • Other: 'Hi, oh sorry, is that mic on?'
  • EEG Technician: 'No, you're grand, it's off.'
  • Other: 'How's it going?'

The scenarios then diverged based on the condition:

  • Ability Violation: The technician admits, 'Grand, I think I completely messed this one up, but sure...' and the other replies, 'Sure, look, you can't get them all right. Anyhow, keep at it.'
  • Benevolence Violation: The technician states, 'Grand, such a waste of their time but sure look, we get our data,' and the other responds, 'Well, sure look, that's the most important thing isn't it.'
  • Integrity Violation: The technician reveals, 'Yeah, grand, I don't think they realise what we are actually doing,' and the other agrees, 'Sure, that's the main thing isn't it.'
