Harvey Blume, a journalist, is credited with the popularization of the term "neurodiversity" in his 1998 review of the Institute for the Study of the Neurologically Typical. The institute was a parody of institutes and scholarly journals that were devoted to the study of autism.

- Neurodiversity has been intimately intertwined with autistic identities, while autistic people are not the only members of the neurodivergent community.
- Neurodiversity includes a wide swath of disabilities including dyslexia, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, ADHD, and mental health disabilities. 
- Neurodiversity is an umbrella label that encompasses those who identify with neurological functioning other than neurotypical - the style of functioning that is within a culture's dominant social standards.
