In an unmoderated usability test, you create the tasks and questions ahead of time and participants participate in their own time. Participants will share their screen as they perform the usability tasks. Keep in mind that a moderator will not be present in this type of usability test and the participant will be left to carry out the tasks on their own. This is usually done remotely.

A moderated usability test is another usability technique in which the UX researcher or moderator is actively engaged with the participant in real-time as they carry out the given tasks. Unlike unmoderated usability tests, moderated usability tests requires the moderator to be present throughout the session.
