Concept

Using Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) to Treat or Prevent COVID-19

Preliminary data shows that infected COVID-19 patients who were treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were more likely to experience severe symptoms and had a higher mortality rate than those who didn't take these drugs. NSAIDs nonselectively block COX1 and COX2, two enzymes that are important in maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis. It is thought that COX1/2 inhibition may exacerbate the vulnerability of patients with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, or cardiovascular disease to SARS-CoV-2 infection or COVID-19 symptoms.
