The vestibular system includes three semicircular canals—the posterior, horizontal, and superior canals. These are fluid-filled tubes in the inner ear, oriented on different planes to detect the head's rotational movements, which is essential for maintaining balance.

The utricle is the fluid-filled sac where the three semicircular canals meet. The utricle detects when the head is in static positions.

The saccule is below the utricle, and is fluid filled. It responds to static movements of the head.

The ampulla is a swelling in each of the semicircular canals. Inside of each ampulla are hair cells that signal movement in the plane the canal is in.

This is the gelatinous structure in which the stereocilia of hair cells in the ampulla are embedded. They are responsible for detecting movement of the fluid in the semicircular canals.

Otoliths are small crystals that are on the gelatinous membrane and increase the receptors' sensitivity.

This is the reflex in the brainstem that is responsible for maintaining gaze on an object as the head moves. 

Vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR)

It is believed that the lateral-line system is what the vestibular system evolved from. The lateral-line system is found in different types of fish and amphibians, and is responsible for detecting water motion.

These are nuclei found in the brainstem which receive input from the vestibulocochlear nerve (cranial nerve VIII)

Motion sickness is nausea that results from strong vestibular stimulation such as from a car or a boat. Motion sickness is more likely to occur when the movement is out of the person's control, such as being a passenger instead of the driver in a car.

The vestibular nerve is responsible for transmitting sensory signals from the stimulated hair cells within the vestibular organs to the brain, conveying information about head movement and gravitational forces.

Information from the vestibular system is integrated with both proprioception, the sense of body position, and kinesthesia, the sense of body movement. This interplay is essential for controlling movement and the reflexes that compensate for shifts in body position.

Vestibular hair cells are sensory receptors located within the fluid-filled vestibular organs (the utricle, saccule, and semicircular canals) of the inner ear. Similar to the hair cells in the auditory system, they are stimulated by fluid movement. However, vestibular hair cells specifically respond to gravitational forces and head movement, subsequently transmitting signals to the brain through the vestibular nerve.

Infants have diverse hearing capbilities in early life. If that hearing ability isn't used, for example if they have damage or deformity in their ears, their ability to distinguish or interpret sounds disappears.
