Voluntary Spiritual Death and Preparation in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Chapter 22, Poem 7)

In Chapter 22, Poem 7 of Mokhtar Nameh, Attar reflects on the inevitability of physical death, reminding the reader that everyone who is born must die. To prepare for this unavoidable end, he advises the seeker to "die a hundred times every day and be alive." This practice of continuous, voluntary spiritual death—subjugating the ego and severing worldly attachments—eases the shock of the final physical death. By undergoing this spiritual death repeatedly, the seeker attains true mystical vitality and ensures that the ultimate transition is not overwhelmingly difficult.
