This gene codes for a protein that is important in DNA methylation/demethylation processes.  The frequencies of MTHFR rs1801131 C, MTR rs1805087 G and MTRR rs1801394 G alleles (probably associated with a reduced DNA methylation capacity) are significantly higher in athletes compared to nonathletes.
