Well-Being as the Relish for the Bread of Poverty in Baharestan
In this anecdote from Jami's Baharestan, the ascetic Bishr Hafi answers a disciple who does not know what side dish (نان خورش) to eat with his plain bread. Bishr tells him to bring to mind the blessing of well-being (عافیت) and take that remembrance as his relish. The accompanying verses extend the point: for the destitute person nourished at the table of poverty (خوان فقر), gratitude for health and safety is itself the only relish needed. The passage teaches contentment (قناعت) and thankfulness, framing awareness of divine well-being as a spiritual sustenance that surpasses any craving for material comfort.
