What affect did exergame features that increase basic need satisfaction have on motivation and engagement? (SDT/CET) (Peng et al. 2012)

Peng et al. provided additional evidence on how game features that increase (or don't) need satisfaction to prior literature (Przybylski et al., 2010; Ryan et al., 2006).

Game features supporting need satisfaction of autonomy:

  • greater likelihood of game recommendation
  • greater game enjoyment
  • greater motivation for future play
  • greater game rating

Game features supporting need satisfaction of competence:

  • greater game enjoyment
  • greater likelihood of game recommendation
  • greater self-efficacy for exercise using the game
  • greater game rating

Outcomes that were unaffected:

  • self reported effort exerted in gameplay
