In a study by MacDonald and Martineau, researchers manipulated participants' moods by instructing them to think either positive or negative thoughts. A subsequent mood measure revealed a distinct difference in scores between the two groups. This successful experimental manipulation demonstrated both that the mood manipulation worked and that the mood measure possessed criterion validity.
