When a systematic empirical study yields statistically significant results that are consistent with the hypothesis, researchers conclude that the underlying theory is supported. This means the theory made an accurate prediction and can now account for a newly observed phenomenon, thereby strengthening its validity.

Supporting a Scientific Theory

While empirically confirming a hypothesis strengthens a scientific theory, it can never definitively prove the theory to be true. Scientists intentionally avoid using the word 'prove' because a positive finding might simply be a Type I error, multiple plausible theories might predict the identical outcome, and future tests could always produce disconfirming evidence.

Impossibility of Proving a Theory

Empirically confirming a hypothesis can strengthen a scientific theory, but it cannot definitively prove the theory to be true. One major reason for this limitation is that multiple plausible theories might logically imply the exact same hypothesis. When such a hypothesis is confirmed by empirical data, it provides evidence that strengthens all of those alternative theories equally, making it impossible to determine which specific theory is the correct one based on that single test.
