Disguised participant observation occurs when researchers become active members of the social group they are studying while completely concealing their true identities and research intentions. This covert approach is sometimes the only viable method for studying highly guarded or protective groups, such as cults. A key advantage is that it is less susceptible to participant reactivity compared to undisguised observation, as people behave more naturally when they do not know they are being studied.

Leon Festinger and his colleagues conducted a well-known disguised participant observation study by infiltrating the Seekers, a doomsday cult predicting the world's end on December 21, 1954. By hiding their identities as researchers, they were able to meticulously document the members' psychological coping mechanisms when the prophecy failed. They noted that the members, rather than abandoning their beliefs, concluded that their own faith had prevented the apocalypse—a finding that Festinger later used to develop the theory of cognitive dissonance.

Conducting disguised participant observation presents significant ethical challenges, primarily because it fundamentally relies on deception. Researchers intentionally hide their true motives for joining the social group, meaning they cannot obtain informed consent from the participants before observing their behaviors and collecting data.

Ethics of Disguised Participant Observation

David Rosenhan's 1973 investigation into psychiatric wards serves as a classic example of disguised participant observation. Rosenhan and a group of 'pseudopatients' faked symptoms to be admitted to psychiatric hospitals, allowing them to covertly observe how staff interacted with and treated patients. Because the researchers concealed their true identities, the staff and actual patients behaved naturally around them.
