The facial feedback hypothesis posits that an individual's facial expressions can directly influence their emotional state. This theory suggests a two-way relationship where not only does happiness cause smiling, but the act of smiling can itself enhance feelings of happiness. Research supports this idea, showing that the intensity of a facial expression can affect the corresponding emotional reaction, and conversely, suppressing facial expressions can diminish the intensity of an emotion.
