Research Supporting the Facial Feedback Hypothesis
Empirical studies provide evidence for the facial feedback hypothesis. For instance, research has shown that inhibiting facial expressions of emotion can reduce the intensity of the feelings experienced by individuals. Another study found that paralyzing frowning muscles with Botox injections led to a decrease in reported depression among participants. Furthermore, the intensity of a facial expression has been linked to the strength of the emotional reaction and even to corresponding differences in physiological arousal.
