- Coalition building has been central to the autistic rights movement.
- Professor Sami Schalk's notion of "identifying with" is useful in coalition building as a framework to understand ways individuals and groups identify with each other.
- Identifying with appears to occur between autistic communities and the broader disability rights movements and communities within the neurodiversity paradigm as members support those broader objectives and initiatives while not viewing themselves to be one and the same.

Coalition-building within the autistic rights movement and "identifying with"

- The Black Lives Matter movement emerged in 2012 in response to systemic violence against black people by police.
- Some news outlets note the disability status of those who have been killed, but many do not.
- A number of less-publicized incidents included police violence against autistic people of color. These include the cases of Marcus Abrams, Tario Anderson, Troy Canales, and Stephon Watts. 
- ASAN, the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, explains police often assume autistic people are intoxicated or noncompliant. 
- In May 2016 the #intersectionND chat focused on the topic of police brutality
- HR 2302, the Police Training and Independent Review Act, included having law enforcement agencies train officers on disability, as a condition of receiving federal funding. 
- While there is differences on how to decrease police violence, there has been larger recognition uplifting the voices of those most impacted, in this case the voice of neurodiverse people of color. 
- BLM and disability -center organizations, such as ASAN, are uplifting each other concerns in an effort to coalition-build.
