Abbreviation of Binomial Names

In scientific writing, an organism's binomial name is typically abbreviated after its first mention. The standard abbreviated form consists of the first initial of the genus, followed by a period, and then the full specific epithet. For example, the bacterium Escherichia coli is commonly shortened to E. coli.
