Derivations of Taxonomic Names

Taxonomic names in the 18{}18th through 20{}20th centuries were typically derived from Latin because it was the common language of early scientists. Today, newly discovered organisms receive names derived from Latin, Greek, or English. These nomenclature choices often reflect a distinctive trait of the organism or honor the scientist who discovered it.
