Activation-Synthesis Theory of Dreaming

Activation-synthesis theory of dreaming is Alan Hobson's account in which dreams arise as the brain tries to synthesize neural activation occurring during REM sleep. Early forms of the theory contrasted with meaning-centered views of dreams by treating dreams as the brain's effort to make sense of REM-related activity rather than as representations of psychological angst.
