Cellular Mechanisms of REM-NREM Sleep Switching
Cellular circuits control the switch between REM and NREM sleep. Excitatory glutamatergic neurons inhibit REM sleep and promote NREM sleep; these neurons share a common developmental origin with neurons that promote wakefulness. Downstream, inhibitory GABAergic (γ-aminobutyric acid-releasing) neurons act to inhibit REM sleep.

Sleep Stage Analysis
A sleep study participant's brain wave recordings show high-frequency, low-amplitude waves, very similar to those of someone who is awake and alert. Simultaneously, monitoring of their muscle activity shows a near-complete lack of tone in their voluntary muscles. Which statement best analyzes this physiological state?
