Multimodal Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (MTA) Study

ADHD treatments evaluated by the MTA

Participants were referred to the study by health care providers, the media, and the child’s teachers. They were selected through interviews with the parents and children to determine the root of the child’s symptoms

MTA participant selection

- Combination ADHD treatment is superior to behavioral treatment and community care. It is also always superior to community care
- Combination-treatment participants received lower medication doses than meds-only participants

Major findings of the MTA

- Extended release medications didn’t exist when the MTA was conducted
- Treatments weren’t controlled post-study causing us to be unable to conclude that MTA treatments are effective beyond the study period

Limitations of the MTA

The data of those who took place in the study are currently being collected on an as-available basis
