According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), participants for the Multimodal Treatment of ADHD (MTA) Study were referred by healthcare providers, the media, and teachers. Selection was finalized through interviews with parents and children to evaluate symptoms and establish study eligibility.

Participant Selection in the MTA Study

The Multimodal Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (MTA) study faced significant limitations. First, extended-release medications did not exist when the study was conducted. Second, treatments were not controlled post-study, which makes it impossible to definitively conclude that MTA treatments remained effective beyond the study period.

Limitations of the MTA Study

Major findings of the Multimodal Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (MTA) study indicate that a combination of intensive behavioral treatment and medication management is superior to behavioral treatment alone and routine community care.
