Al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi (Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn Ali al-Tirmidhi) is remembered in this section above all for his book Khatm al-Wilaya, 'The Seal of Sainthood', which Hujwiri singles out as his most celebrated work. In it al-Tirmidhi set out the Sufi doctrine that the friends of God (awliya) form a hierarchy of sainthood that culminates in a final seal of the saints, paralleling the way prophethood culminates in a seal of the prophets. This teaching became his signature contribution and the mark of the group of Sufis later named after him, the Hakimis.

<p>و منهم: شیخ باخطر، و فانی از اوصاف بشر، ابوعبدالله محمدبن علی الترمذی، رضی الله عنه<br />
اندر فنون علم کامل و امام بود و از مشایخ محتشم بود. وی را تصانیف بسیار است و نیکو، و کرامات مشهور اندر بیان هر کتاب، چون ختم الولایة و کتاب النهج و نوادرالاصول، و جز این بسیار کتب دیگر ساخته است و سخت معظم است به نزدکی من؛ زیرا که دلم شکار وی است.</p>
<p>و شیخ من گفت رحمةالله علیه که: «محمد در یتیم است که اندر همه عالم همال ندارد.»<br />
و اندر علوم ظاهر وی را نیز کتب است و اندر احادیث اسناد عالی دارد و تفسیری ابتدا کرده بوده است عمر تمام کردن آن نیافت، بدان مقدار که کرده است در میان اهل عالم منتشر است و فقه بر یکی از خواص یاران ابوحنیفه رضی الله عنهم خوانده بود. وی را اندر ترمد محمد حکیم خوانند و حکیمیان از متصوفه اقتدا بدو کنند.</p>
<p>و وی را مناقب بسیار است. یکی از آن جمله آن که با خضر پیغمبر علیه السلام صحبت داشته بود و ابوبکر وراق ترمدی که مرید وی بود روایت کند که: «هر یک شنبه خضر به نزدیک وی آمدی و واقعه ها از یک دیگر بپرسیدندی.»<br />
از وی می آید که گفت: «من جهل أوصاف العبودیة فهو بنعوت الربانیة أجهل.» هرکه به علم شریعت و اوصاف بندگی جاهل باشد او به اوصاف خداوند تعالی جاهل تر باشد. و هرکه به معرفت نفس که مخلوق است راه نبرد به معرفت حق تعالی که خالق است، هم راه نبرد. و هرکه آفات صفت بشریت نبیند لطایف صفات ربوبیت کی داند؟ که ظاهر به باطن تعلق دارد، هرکه به ظاهر تعلق کند بی باطن، محال و هر که به باطن تعلق کندبی ظاهر، محال. پس معرفت اوصاف ربوبیت اندر صحت ارکان عبودیت بسته است و بی آن درست نیاید. و این کلمه سخت با اصل و مفید است، به جایگاه خود تمام کرده شود، ان شاءالله، تعالی.</p>

And among them: the awe-inspiring shaykh, annihilated from the attributes of humanity, Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn Ali al-Tirmidhi, may Allah be pleased with him.
He was perfect and a leader in the branches of knowledge, and among the most eminent of the shaykhs. He has many fine writings, and his miracles are famous, explained in each of his books, such as Khatm al-Wilayah, Kitab al-Nahj, and Nawadir al-Usul, and besides these he has composed many other books. He is greatly revered in my eyes, for my heart is his prey.
And my shaykh, may Allah's mercy be upon him, said: 'Muhammad is a unique pearl who has no equal in all the world.'
In the outward sciences he also has books, and in hadith he has a high (elevated) chain of transmission. He had begun a commentary (tafsir) but did not live long enough to complete it; the portion he did complete is circulated among the people of the world. He had studied jurisprudence (fiqh) under one of the select companions of Abu Hanifa, may Allah be pleased with them. In Tirmidh they call him Muhammad the Sage (Hakim), and the Hakimiyya among the Sufis follow him as their model.
He has many virtues (manaqib). One of them is that he kept the company of the prophet Khidr, peace be upon him. Abu Bakr al-Warraq al-Tirmidhi, who was his disciple, relates that: 'Every Saturday Khidr would come to him, and they would ask one another about spiritual occurrences.'
It is reported from him that he said: 'Whoever is ignorant of the attributes of servanthood is even more ignorant of the qualities of Lordship.' That is: whoever is ignorant of the knowledge of the Sacred Law (shari'a) and of the attributes of servanthood is more ignorant of the attributes of God, exalted be He. And whoever finds no way to the knowledge of the self, which is created, finds no way either to the knowledge of the Truth, exalted be He, who is the Creator. And whoever does not see the defects of the attribute of humanity, how can he know the subtleties of the attributes of Lordship? For the outward is bound to the inward: whoever attaches himself to the outward without the inward is in error, and whoever attaches himself to the inward without the outward is in error. تولا حکیمیان به ابی عبدالله محمدبن علی حکیم الترمذی رضی الله عنه کنند. وی یکی از ائمهٔ وقت بود اندر جملهٔ علوم ظاهری و باطنی و وی را تصانیف و نکت بسیار است و قاعدهٔ سخن و طریقش بر ولایت بود و عبارت از حقیقت آن کردی و از درجات اولیا و مراعات ترتیب آن و او خود علی حده بحری است بیکرانه با عجوبات بسیار.

The Hakimians pledge their allegiance to Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn Ali al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi, may Allah be pleased with him. He was one of the imams of his time in the whole of the exoteric and esoteric sciences, and he has many writings and subtle sayings. The foundation of his discourse and his path was upon sainthood (walaya), and he gave expression to the reality of it, and of the degrees of the saints and the observance of their order; and he himself is, apart from all others, a boundless sea with many wonders.

The beginning of the unveiling of his doctrine is that you should know that God Most High has saints whom He has chosen out of His creation, and whose aspiration He has cut off from attachments, and whom He has delivered from the claims of the lower self and its passions, and He has established each one upon a degree, and opened for them a door of meanings.

On this matter there is much to say, and several of his principles must be explained so that it may become known. Now I will, by way of brevity, make plain the outward sense of this, and I will set forth the descriptions of people's discourse concerning it.
