al-Khawwas on Tawakkul (Trust in God)

Hujwiri names Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Ahmad al-Khawwas the sarhang-i mutawakkilan (commander of those who practice trust), a master who held a lofty station in tawakkul, reliance on God.

His central teaching compresses all knowledge into two phrases: do not burden yourself (takalluf) with what has already been taken care of for you, and do not squander what you have been entrusted with and made responsible for.

The doctrine is that one should not exert anxious effort over one's apportioned lot (qismat), because the eternal decree is not altered by human striving; yet one must still faithfully discharge the duties laid upon one, so as to be sustained in both this world and the next. It draws a boundary between passive trust in what God provides and active responsibility for one's obligations.
