English translation

And among them: the commander of those who trust in God, and the leader of those who surrender, Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Ahmad al-Khawwas, may Allah be pleased with him.

He held a great rank in trust (tawakkul) and a lofty station, and he had met many masters. He has many signs and miracles, and fine writings on the practices of this path.

It is related from him that he said: 'All knowledge is in two words: do not burden yourself with what has been taken care of for you, and do not waste what you have been entrusted to keep.' Knowledge in its entirety is gathered in two words: one is that concerning which God Most High has removed the worry from you—do not trouble yourself over it; and the other is that which you are bound to do and which is an obligation upon you—do not neglect it, so that you may be successful in this world and the next. The meaning of this is that you should not strive anxiously over your allotted portion, for the eternal allotment is not changed by your striving; and do not fall short in the command, for abandoning the order brings punishment upon you.

He was asked: 'What have you seen of wonders?' He said: 'I have seen many wonders, but nothing more wondrous than that Khidr the prophet, upon him be peace, requested of me that he might keep my company, and I did not consent.' They said: 'Why?' He said: 'Not because I sought a better companion than him, but rather I feared that I would rely upon him instead of upon the Truth, and that his companionship would harm my trust in God, and that through a supererogatory act I would fall short of an obligatory one.'

And this is among the degrees of perfection. And God knows best.
