Section 3 - Chapter

Original content

English translation

And as for what I said: 'I followed the path of istikhara (seeking divine guidance),' my meaning by that was the observance of the spiritual etiquette of God, the Mighty and Sublime, which He commanded to His Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—and his followers, saying: 'So when you recite the Qur'an, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the rejected' (Nahl: 98). Seeking refuge (isti'adha), seeking guidance (istikhara), and seeking assistance (isti'ana) are all in the sense of seeking and submitting one's affairs to God, Glorified and Exalted be He, and finding salvation from various afflictions. The Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him and may God be pleased with them, narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, taught us istikhara just as he taught us a chapter of the Qur'an.

Thus, when a servant realizes that the goodness of affairs does not depend on his own acquisition and planning—since God Almighty knows best the welfare of His servants, and the good and evil that reach the servant are predestined—what choice remains but submission to the divine decree and seeking help from Him? This is so that He may ward off from the servant the evil of the lower self (nafs) and its imperious promptings in all of his states, and bestow upon him goodness and welfare. Therefore, at the beginning of all undertakings, the servant must practice istikhara so that God Almighty may preserve him from error, defect, and its afflictions. And through God is all success.
