Section 4 - Chapter

Original content

English translation

Know that there is a group among the heretics—may God curse them—who are called Sophists, and their doctrine is that: 'Knowledge of nothing is valid, and knowledge itself does not exist.' We say to them: 'This knowledge by which you know that knowledge of nothing is valid—is it itself valid or not?' If they say 'It is,' they have affirmed knowledge; and if they say 'It is not,' then to contend over something that is not valid is absurd, and to speak with such a person is not rational.

And a group among the heretics who are attached to this path say the same: 'Our knowledge of nothing is valid, so the abandonment of knowledge is more complete for us than affirming it.' And this stems from their folly, error, and ignorance; for abandoning knowledge is not outside of two cases: either it is by some knowledge or by some ignorance. Now knowledge does not negate knowledge nor stand as its opposite, and to abandon knowledge by means of knowledge is absurd; so ignorance alone remains here. And since it is established that the negation of knowledge is ignorance, and its abandonment is by ignorance, and the ignorant one is blameworthy, and ignorance is the companion of unbelief, it is false that the Truth should be attached to ignorance—and this is contrary to all the masters. And when people heard this saying and undertook it, they said that this is the doctrine of all the people of Sufism and that their way is thus; until their belief became confused and they failed to distinguish truth from falsehood.

And we have surrendered all matters to God the Exalted, so that they may remain in the downpour of their own error. If religion had seized their collar, they would have conducted themselves better than this, and would not have let go of the rule of regard, and would not have looked upon the friends of God, mighty and exalted, with such an eye, and would have taken better care of their own state. And if a group of heretics attached themselves to the free and noble ones so that by their beauty they might be delivered from afflictions and live in the shadow of their glory, why should everyone be measured against them, and open contentiousness be undertaken in dealing with them, and their worth be trampled underfoot?

And I was engaged in a debate with one of those clad in the guise of knowledge—who has named the cap of arrogance the glory of knowledge, and the following of caprice the sunnah of the Messenger (peace be upon him), and agreement with Satan the conduct of the imam. In the midst of it he said: 'The heretics are twelve groups. One group is among the Sufis.' I said: 'If one group is among them, eleven groups are among you. They can better guard themselves from one group than you can from eleven groups.'

But all of this is the result of the decay of the age and the afflictions that have appeared. And God the Exalted has ever kept His saints hidden among a people, and has kept that people, on their account, secluded among the creation. And well did that elder of elders and sun of disciples, Ali ibn Bundar al-Sayrafi—may God's mercy be upon him—speak: 'The corruption of hearts is in proportion to the corruption of the age and its people.'

Now I shall bring a chapter on their sayings, so that it may be an admonition to him in whose affair there is a true grace from the Truth Exalted, against the deniers concerning this group. And with God is the granting of success.
