Original content

English translation

Among them: the jewel of the treasury of modesty, the most devout of the people of purity, the one attached to the court of divine contentment, and firmly established upon the path of Mustafa (may the blessings of God be upon him), Abu Amr Uthman ibn Affan, may Allah be pleased with him. His virtues are manifest and his merits are evident in all meanings. Abdullah ibn Rabah and Abu Qatada (may Allah be pleased with them) narrate that on the day of the Battle of the House (Harb al-Dar) we were near Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him. When the mob gathered at his gate, his servants took up arms. Uthman said: 'Whoever does not take up arms is freed from my property.' And out of our fear we came out. Hasan ibn Ali met us on the way. We turned back with him and came near Uthman to see for what task Hasan, may Allah be pleased with him, had come. And when Hasan entered, he gave greeting, and offered him condolence upon that affliction, and said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, without your command I cannot draw a sword against the Muslims, and you are the rightful caliph. Command me so that I may repel the affliction of this people from you.' Uthman said to him: 'O son of my brother, return and sit in your house until God brings His command; for we have no need in shedding blood. O nephew, return and sit in your own house until the command of the Lord and His decree be whatever it may be; for we have no need of shedding the blood of Muslims.' And this is the sign of surrender (taslim) at the time of the arrival of affliction in the degree of intimate friendship (khullat); just as Nimrod kindled a fire and placed Abraham (upon him be peace) on the arm of the catapult. Gabriel (upon him be peace) came and said: 'Do you have any need?' He said: 'As for you, no. I have no need of you.' He said: 'Then ask of God.' He said: 'His knowledge of my state suffices me from my asking. It is enough for me that He knows what befalls me, and He is more knowing of me than I am of myself. He knows in what my welfare lies.' So Uthman is in the place of the Friend (Khalil), the mob in the place of the fire, and Hasan in the place of Gabriel; but Abraham (upon him be peace) had deliverance from affliction, while Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) had destruction within affliction, for deliverance belonged to subsistence (baqa) and destruction to annihilation (fana); and concerning this meaning I have said something before. So the emulation of this group is in the giving of wealth, in modesty, in the surrender of affairs, and in sincerity in worship by him, may Allah be pleased with him. And he is in truth the rightful imam in reality (haqiqat) and in law (shariat), and his path (tariqat) in love is manifest. And with God is success.
