English translation

And among them: the commander of the people of faith and the ascetic of the assembly of the people of beneficence, the imam of the people of realization, drowned in the sea of love, Abu Hafs Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, who is renowned for his miracles and celebrated for his discernment, and was distinguished by insight and firmness. And he has subtleties in this path and truths in this meaning; as the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: 'Truth speaks upon the tongue of Umar.' And he also said, peace be upon him: 'Among the former nations there were those who were divinely inspired, and if there be such in my nation, it is Umar.' And he has many subtle symbols in this path, all of which cannot be enumerated in this book; but it is related from him that he said: 'Seclusion is rest from evil companions.' Seclusion is rest from bad companions, and seclusion is of two kinds: one is turning away from people, and the other is cutting off from them. Turning away from people is to choose a solitary place, and to outwardly renounce love of one's own kind, and to be at peace with oneself through seeing the faults of one's own deeds, and to seek one's own release from mixing with people, and to make people safe from one's own evil; but cutting off from people is with the heart, and the attribute of the heart has no connection to the outward. When someone is inwardly cut off from people and from love of them, he has no awareness of created things such that thought of them would dominate his heart. Then such a person, though he be among people, is alone from people, and his aspiration is set apart from them, and this is a very lofty and remote station; and this attribute was truly Umar's, may Allah be pleased with him, who gave a sign of the rest of seclusion, while outwardly he was amid governance, command, and the caliphate. And this is clear proof that the people of the inward, though outwardly mixed with people, have their hearts attached to the Truth and in every state return to Him, and that measure of companionship they keep with people they count as a trial from the Truth, and by that companionship with people they are not turned away from the Truth Most High; for the world is never made pure for the friends of the Truth, nor do its states become wholesome; as Umar said, may Allah be pleased with him: 'A dwelling founded upon tribulation being without tribulation is impossible.' A house whose foundation is upon affliction and tribulation - it is impossible that it should ever be free of affliction. And Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, was among the elite of the household and companions of the Messenger, peace be upon him, and in the presence of the Truth Most High he was accepted in all his deeds; to such a degree that Gabriel, peace be upon him, came at the beginning of the time of Umar's Islam and said to the Messenger: 'O Muhammad, the people of heaven rejoice today at the Islam of Umar.' So the following of this group in wearing the patched cloak and in firmness of religion is after him; besides that he is, in all respects, an imam for the people of the world, may Allah be pleased with him.
