English translation

And among them: the imam of the age and the unique one of the era, Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Hasan al-Basri, may Allah's mercy be upon him. Some give his kunya as Abu Muhammad and some as Abu Sa'id. He holds great rank and importance among the people of this science, indeed of all the sciences. And he was subtle in allusion in spiritual practice. And in the anecdotes I found that a Bedouin came to him and asked him about patience. He said: 'Patience is of two kinds: one is patience amid calamities and afflictions, and the other is patience regarding forbidden things.' The Bedouin said: 'You are an ascetic; I have never seen anyone more ascetic than you'—meaning, you are an ascetic more ascetic than any I have ever seen, and more patient. Hasan said: 'O Bedouin, but my asceticism is entirely desire, and my patience is anxiety.' The Bedouin said: 'Explain this to me, for my belief has become confused.' He said: 'My patience in affliction or in obedience speaks of my fear of the fire of Hell, and this is the very essence of anxiety; and my asceticism in this world is desire for the Hereafter, and this is the very essence of desire. Blessed is he who removes his own portion from the midst, so that his patience is for the Truth alone—glorified be His majesty—and not out of fear of Hell, and his asceticism is for the Truth whose bounty is absolute and universal, and not to reach Paradise.' And this is the sign of the soundness of sincerity. And it is also related from him, may Allah's mercy be upon him, that he said: 'Keeping company with the wicked bequeaths ill opinion of the good.' Whoever keeps company with an evil band becomes suspicious of the good among that band. This is a very sound saying, and fitting for the people of this age, who all deny the beloved ones of the presence of the Truth—glorified be His majesty. And this has come about because they keep company with these pseudo-Sufis and people of mere outward form, and see their deeds set upon treachery, and their tongues upon lying and backbiting, and their ears upon listening to quatrains and idle talk, and their eyes upon amusement and lust, and their whole ambition upon amassing forbidden and doubtful things. They imagine that the practice of the Sufis is just this, or that the way of the Sufis is such. No—rather their deeds are all obedience, and their tongues remembrance of the Truth and Reality, and their ears the place of hearing the sacred law, and their eyes the place of the beauty of contemplation, and their ambition the sum of the secrets of Lordship. If a group has appeared who, among their ranks, have taken up treachery, the treachery of those traitors returns upon them, not upon those free ones of the world and masters of the age. So whoever keeps company with the wicked, that is from his own evil; for if there were any good in him, he would keep company with the good. 'Like with like' is a proven effect. So each person should blame himself, for he keeps company with his own peer and equal. Those who deny them are the most wicked and basest of God's creatures—glorified be His majesty—for their company has been with the most wicked and basest, and when they found no whim or aim fulfilled, they denied them; or they followed them, and so, like them, became destroyed. They did not come toward those good and beloved ones of God the Exalted, that they might look upon them with the eye of approval, and buy their company with soul and heart, and choose their path from the world, and by their blessings attain the goal of both worlds, and cut off from all. And concerning this meaning they have said: Do not disdain my soul while you are its beloved— / For every person yearns toward the one who is like him.
