و منهم: پیر صالح، و به صلاح صالح، ابوحازم المدنی، رحمة الله علیه
مقتدای بعضی از مشابخ بود و وی را اندر معاملت حظی وافر و خطری بزرگ، و اندر فقر قدمی ثابت و دمی صادق و اندر مجاهدت روشی تمام و عمرو بن عثمان المکی رضی الله عنه در امر وی بجد باشد. و کلام وی اندر همه دل ها مقبول است و اندر بیشتر از کتب مسطور.

این عمرو بن عثمان ازوی روایت کند که او را گفتند: «ما مالک؟» قال: «الرضاء عن الله و الغناء عن الناس.» :«مال تو چیست؟» گفت: «مال من رضا به خداوند تعالی و بی نیازی از خلق وی.» و لامحاله هرکه به حق راضی بود از خلق مستغنی بود و خزینهٔ بزرگ تر مرد را رضای خداوند است -تعالی و تقدس- و اشارت به غنای خداوند است -جل جلاله-. پس هر که بدو غنی بود، از غیر وی مستغنی بود و راه به جز به درگاه وی نداند و زاد به جز امید درگاه وی ندارد و اندر خلأ و ملأ به جز وی را نشناسد و جز وی را نخواند و معز و مذل به جز وی را نداند.
یکی از مشایخ گوید: به نزدیک وی اندر آمدم. وی را یافتم خفته. زمانی ببودم تا بیدار شد. گفت: «اندر این ساعت پیغامبر را به خواب دیدم که مرا به سوی تو پیغام داد و گفت: حق مادر نگاه داشتن، بهتر از حج کردن. بازگرد و رضای دل وی بجوی. من از آنجا بازگشتم و به مکه نرفتم.»

از وی بیش از این مسموع ندارم.

English translation

And among them: the righteous elder, righteous in his righteousness, Abu Hazim al-Madani, may Allah's mercy be upon him. He was the exemplar of some of the shaykhs, and he possessed abundant fortune in spiritual dealing and great standing; in poverty he had a firm foot and a truthful breath, and in spiritual striving a complete method; and Amr ibn Uthman al-Makki, may Allah be pleased with him, held him in high esteem. His words are accepted in all hearts and recorded in most of the books. This Amr ibn Uthman relates from him that he was asked: 'What is your wealth?' He said: 'Contentment with Allah and freedom from need of the people.' — 'What is your wealth?' He said: 'My wealth is contentment with Allah the Exalted and independence from His creation.' Inevitably, whoever is content with the Truth is free of need from creation, and a man's greatest treasure is the contentment of Allah — exalted and sanctified is He — and it is an allusion to the sufficiency of Allah, majestic is His majesty. So whoever is made rich by Him is independent of all besides Him, and knows no way except to His court, and takes no provision except the hope of His court, and in solitude and in crowds knows none but Him and calls upon none but Him and knows the giver of honor and abasement to be none but Him. One of the shaykhs says: I came to him and found him asleep. I stayed a while until he awoke. He said: 'At this very hour I saw the Prophet in a dream, and he gave me a message for you and said: Honoring the right of one's mother is better than performing the Hajj. Return and seek the contentment of her heart. So I turned back from there and did not go to Mecca.' I have heard nothing more from him than this.
