Original content

English translation

Among them: the brave one of the path and firmly established in the law, Habib al-Ajami, may Allah be pleased with him. He was high in aspiration and of great worth, and in rank he held a precious standing and great esteem among men. His repentance came first at the hands of Khwaja Hasan al-Basri, may Allah's mercy be upon him. In his early days he practiced usury and committed corruption. God, mighty and majestic, out of the perfection of His grace granted him sincere repentance (tawba nasuh) and bestowed divine enabling upon him, so that he returned to His court, glorified be His majesty, and learned some knowledge from Hasan. His tongue was non-Arab (Persian); it had not become fluent in Arabic. The Lord, exalted and sanctified, singled him out with many miracles (karamat), to such a degree that one evening prayer, Hasan passed by the door of his hermitage; he had given the call to stand for the evening prayer and was standing in prayer. Hasan entered but did not follow him in prayer, because his tongue was not fluent in reciting the Quran. And that night when he slept, he saw the Lord, glorified and exalted, in a dream, and said: 'O Lord, in what does Your pleasure lie?' He said: 'O Hasan, you had found Our pleasure, but you did not know its worth.' He said: 'O Lord, what was that thing?' He said: 'If last night you had prayed behind Habib and had not withheld recognition of the soundness of his intention on account of the imperfection of his expression, We would have been pleased with you.' And it is well known among this group that when Hasan fled from the men of Hajjaj, he entered the hermitage of Habib. They came and said: 'O Habib, have you seen Hasan anywhere?' He said: 'Yes.' They said: 'Where is he?' He said: 'Here, he is in my hermitage.' They entered the hermitage, saw no one, and thought that Habib was mocking them. They reproached him, saying: 'You are not telling the truth.' And he swore an oath: 'I am telling the truth, and here he is in my hermitage.' A second and a third time they entered and did not find him, and they left. Hasan came out and said: 'O Habib, I know that God Most High, through your blessings, did not reveal me to these oppressors. Why did you tell them that he is in this place?' He said: 'O master, it was not through my blessings that they were not shown you, but rather through the blessing of truth-telling they did not see you. Had I lied, they would have disgraced both me and you.' And of this kind of miracles he has many. He was asked: 'In what does the pleasure of the Lord Most High lie?' He said: 'In a heart in which there is no dust of hypocrisy.' In a heart in which there is no dust of hypocrisy; because hypocrisy is the opposite of concord, and contentment (rida) is the very essence of concord, and love has no connection with hypocrisy, and its abode is contentment. So contentment is the attribute of friends, and hypocrisy is the attribute of enemies. And this is a great matter; I shall explain it elsewhere, God willing.
