English translation

And among them: the master of the people of realities, and one severed from all attachments, Abu al-Hasan Sari ibn al-Mughallis al-Saqati, may Allah's mercy be upon him.

He was the maternal uncle of Junayd and learned in all the sciences, and in Sufism he holds a great rank. He was the first to delve into arranging the spiritual stations (maqamat) and expounding the states (ahwal), may Allah's mercy be upon him. Most of the masters of Iraq are his disciples. He had seen Habib al-Ra'i and kept his company, and he was a disciple of Ma'ruf al-Karkhi. In the market of Baghdad he traded in secondhand goods (as a saqat-seller). When the market of Baghdad burned, they told him: 'Your shop has burned.' He said: 'Then I am freed from its bond.' But when they looked, his shop had not burned, while all the shops on its four sides had burned. When he saw that, he gave away all he had to the dervishes and chose the path of Sufism.

He was asked: 'How was the beginning of your state?' He said: 'One day Habib al-Ra'i came into my shop. I offered him a small piece (of bread or coin) to give to the dervishes. He said to me: May Allah reward you. From the day that this remark reached my ear, worldly success fell away from me.'

And it is related from him that he said: 'O Allah, however You may punish me with anything, do not punish me with the abasement of the veil (dhull al-hijab).' O Lord, if You punish me with something, do not punish me with the abasement of the veil; for as long as I am not veiled from You, punishment and affliction become easy for me through the remembrance and vision of You, and when I am veiled from You, Your eternal bliss becomes my ruin through the abasement of Your veil. So an affliction that is within the vision of the One who afflicts is no affliction. The affliction that is within the veil of the One who afflicts is a blessing; for in hell there is no affliction harsher than the veil. For if in hell the people of hell were unveiled to God Most High, the sinful believers would never remember paradise; because the vision of the Truth, mighty is His name, grants the soul such a draught that it would not remember the punishment of the body and the affliction of the frame, nor be aware of it. And in paradise there is no blessing more perfect than the unveiling (kashf); for if all those blessings and a hundredfold more were attained for them, while they were veiled from the Lord, ruin would rise up from their hearts and souls. So the way (sunnah) of the Lord is that in all states He keeps the hearts of His friends seeing by Him, so that they can bear all hardship, discipline, and afflictions by drinking of that vision, until their prayer becomes thus: 'We hold all punishments dearer than Your veil; for when Your beauty is unveiled upon our hearts, we do not think of affliction.' And Allah knows best.
