و منهم: شمع آل محمد، و از جملهٔ علایق مجرد سید زمانه خود، ابوعبدالله الحسین بن علی بن ابی طالب، رضی الله عنهما
از محققان اولیا بود و قبلهٔ اهل بلا و قتیل دشت کربلا و اهل این قصه بر درستی حال وی متفق اند که تا حق ظاهر بود مر حق را متابع بود چون حق مفقود شد شمشیر بر کشید و تا جان عزیز فدای شهادت خدای عز و جل نکرد نیارامید.

و رسول را علیه السلام اندر وی نشانهایی بود که او بدان مخصوص بود؛ چنان که عمر بن الخطاب رضی الله عنه روایت کند که: روزی به نزدیک پیغمبر علیه السلام اندر آمدم. وی را دیدم حسین را بر پشت خود افکنده بود و رشته ای اندر دهان خود گرفته و سر رشته به دست حسین داده؛ تا حسین می رفت و وی علیه السلام از پس حسین به زانوها می رفت. من چون آن بدیدم گفتم: «نعم الجمل جملک یا باعبدالله.» پیغمبر گفت، علیه السلام: «نعم الراکب هو یا عمر.»
و وی را کلام لطیف است اندر طریقت حق، و رموز بسیار و معاملت نیکو. از وی روایت آرند گفت: «أشفق الإخوان علیک دینک.»

شفیق ترین برادران تو بر تو دین توست؛ از آن چه نجات مرد اندر متابعت دین بود و هلاکش اندر مخالفت آن. پس مرد خردمند آن بود که به فرمان مشفقان بود و شفقت آن بر خود بداند و جز بر متابعت آن نرود و برادر آن بود که نصیحت نماید و در شفقت نبندد.
و اندر حکایات یافتم که روزی مردی به نزدیک وی آمد و گفت: «یا فرزند رسول خدای عز و جل مردی درویشم و اطفال دارم مرا از تو قوت امشب می باید.» حسین وی را گفت: «بنشین که ما را رزقی در راه است تا بیارند.» بسی برنیامد که پنج صره بیاوردند از نزد معاویه اندر هر صره ای هزار دینار و گفتند که: «معاویه از تو عذر می خواهد و می گوید: این قدر در وجه کهتران صرف فرماید کرد تا بر اثر این، تیمار نیکوتر داشته آید.» حسین رضی الله عنه اشارت کرد که: «بدان درویش دهید.» آن پنج صره بدو دادند و از وی عذرها خواست که: «بس دیر ماندی، و این بس بی خطر عطایی بود که یافتی و اگر ما دانستیمی که این مقدار است تو را انتظار ندادیمی. ما را معذور دار؛ که ما از اهل بلاییم و از همه راحت دنیا باز مانده ایم و مرادهای دنیای خود گم کرده ایم و زندگانی به مراد دیگران می باید کرد.»

و مناقب وی اشهر آن است که بر هیچ کس از امت پوشیده باشد. والله اعلم.

English translation

And among them: the candle of the House of Muhammad, and one detached from worldly attachments, the master of his age, Abu Abd Allah al-Husayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with them both. He was among the verifiers of the saints, the qibla of the people of affliction, and the martyr of the plain of Karbala. The people of this account agree upon the soundness of his state: that as long as the truth was manifest, he followed the truth, and when the truth was lost, he drew his sword and did not rest until he had sacrificed his precious life in martyrdom for God, Mighty and Majestic. The Messenger, peace be upon him, had signs of affection toward him by which he was distinguished. As Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, relates: One day I came into the presence of the Prophet, peace be upon him. I saw that he had set Husayn upon his back and had taken a cord in his mouth, giving the end of the cord into Husayn's hand; so Husayn walked on, and the Prophet, peace be upon him, went along on his knees behind Husayn. When I saw that, I said: 'What an excellent camel is your camel, O Abu Abd Allah!' The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: 'And what an excellent rider is he, O Umar!' He has subtle sayings concerning the path of the Truth, and many symbolic allusions and excellent conduct. It is related from him that he said: 'The most compassionate of brothers toward you is your religion.' The most compassionate of your brothers toward you is your religion; for a man's salvation lies in following religion and his destruction in opposing it. So the wise man is he who abides by the command of the compassionate, recognizes its compassion toward himself, and does not act except in following it. And a true brother is one who gives counsel and does not withhold compassion. And in the anecdotes I found that one day a man came to him and said: 'O son of the Messenger of God, Mighty and Majestic, I am a poor man and I have children; I need sustenance from you for tonight.' Husayn said to him: 'Sit down, for a provision is on its way to us; wait until they bring it.' Not long passed before five purses were brought from Mu'awiya, in each purse a thousand dinars, and they said: 'Mu'awiya asks your pardon and says: Let this amount be spent on the lesser folk, so that thereafter better care may be taken.' Husayn, may Allah be pleased with him, gestured: 'Give it to that poor man.' They gave the five purses to him, and he begged the man's pardon, saying: 'You have waited very long, and this was but a paltry gift that you received; had we known it was only this amount, we would not have kept you waiting. Excuse us; for we are of the people of affliction, we have been cut off from all the comforts of the world, we have lost our own worldly desires, and life must be lived for the desires of others.' And his virtues are too famous to be hidden from anyone of the community. And God knows best.
