Original content

English translation

And among them: the brother of Mustafa, the one drowned in the sea of tribulation and burned in the fire of loving devotion, the exemplar of the friends and the elect of God, Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah honor his face).

He has a great rank and a lofty station in this path, and in the subtlety of expressing the principles of the realities he possessed a full share; so much so that Junayd (may Allah have mercy on him) said: 'Our master in the principles and in enduring tribulation is Ali al-Murtada.' Our master in the principles and in the enduring of tribulation is Ali al-Murtada, may Allah be pleased with him; that is, in knowledge and in spiritual practice the leader of this path is Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), because the people of this path call the knowledge of this path 'the principles,' and its practice is entirely the enduring of tribulation.

It is related that someone came to him and said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, give me a counsel.' He said: 'Do not make your greatest preoccupation to be your family and your children, for if your family and children are among the friends of God, then God does not let His friends perish; and if they are enemies of God, then what is your care and concern for the enemies of God?' See to it that you do not make the concern for wife and child your most important preoccupation; for if they are among the friends of God (majestic is His majesty), He does not let His own friends perish, and if they are enemies of God (mighty and glorious), why do you carry grief for the enemies of God?

And the bearing of this matter is upon the heart's severance from all besides the Truth (majestic is His majesty), for He Himself keeps His servants as He wills, whenever your certainty is truthful; just as Moses (peace be upon him) left the daughter of Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) in a most difficult state and surrendered her to God, and Abraham took Hagar and Ishmael (peace be upon them) and carried them to a valley without cultivation and surrendered them to God (majestic is His majesty); they did not make them their greatest preoccupation and bound their whole heart upon the Truth Most High, until the desire of both worlds was attained in a state of desirelessness, through the surrender of affairs to God (mighty and glorious). And this saying resembles what he (may Allah honor his face) said to a questioner who had asked him: 'What is the purest of earnings?' He said: 'The richness of the heart in God.' Whoever's heart is enriched by God Most High, the nonexistence of the world does not make him poor, and its existence does not bring him joy, and the reality of that returns to poverty and purity, and the mention of it has already passed.

So the people of this path take him as their model in the realities of expressions and the subtleties of allusions, and in the stripping away of what is known of the world, and in gazing upon the ordainment of the Master. And the fine points of his speech are more than can be enumerated, and my way in this book is brevity. And with God is the granting of success.
