Section 7 - Chapter

English translation

But as for what I said: 'Your intent has become known, and the discourse concerning your purpose has been apportioned in this book.' The meaning of this statement was that until the one questioned understands the intent of the questioner, the questioner's aim is not realized; for questions are asked about difficulties, and if by the answer the difficulty is not resolved, it yields no benefit, and the resolving of a difficulty cannot be done except through knowledge of the difficulty. And as for what I said: 'the discourse concerning your purpose has been apportioned,' this means that a comprehensive question receives a comprehensive answer, since the questioner was already knowledgeable of the whole of the degrees and the kindred aspects of his question; whereas the beginner, by contrast, has need of detailed exposition, and of the categories of definitions and their explanation—especially since your purpose, may God make you prosper, in this was that I should give a detailed account and compose a book out of your question. And through God is success granted.
