Original content

English translation

And among them: the chief of the scholars, the exemplar of the jurists, Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, may Allah have mercy on him. He was of great rank and lofty station, dear to his people, and beautiful in patience. He has many virtues in the various branches of knowledge: in jurisprudence, in the doctrine of divine unity, in the truths (of mysticism), in Qur'anic exegesis, in poetry, in philology, and other fields. They say he was a man who appeared crafty yet was pious by nature, not one who appeared pious yet was crafty by nature; and this is a praiseworthy way in this matter, and commended in the view of all the shaykhs, may Allah be pleased with them. And they relate from him that he said: 'Be content with little of this world along with the soundness of your religion, just as a people were content with much of it along with the loss of their religion.' Be content with a little of this world together with the soundness of your religion, just as a people were content with much of it though their religion departed from them; that is, poverty with soundness is better than wealth with heedlessness. For when the poor man looks into his heart he finds no thought of increase, and when he looks at his hand he finds contentment; whereas the rich man, when he looks into his heart, finds the thought of increasing worldly goods, and when he looks at his hand he sees a world full of doubt. Thus the contentment of the friends (of God) with the Lord, free of heedlessness, is better than the contentment of the heedless with a world full of delusion, affliction, regret, remorse, error, and disobedience. So when affliction comes, the heedless say: 'Praise be to God that it did not come upon the body,' while the friends say: 'Praise be to God that it did not come upon the religion.' If the body be in affliction while the heart is in the vision (of God), affliction upon the body is sweet; and if the heart be in heedlessness, though the body be in comfort, that comfort is no comfort but a punishment. In truth, contentment with little of this world is the much of this world, and contentment with much of this world is the little of this world; because its little is as its much. And it is related from him, may Allah be pleased with him, that he was seated in Mecca when a man came to him and said: 'Inform me of something lawful in which there is nothing unlawful, and of something unlawful in which there is nothing lawful.' He said, may Allah be pleased with him: 'The remembrance of God is a lawful thing in which there is nothing unlawful, and the remembrance of other than Him is unlawful in which there is nothing lawful.' The remembrance of God Most High is a lawful thing in which there is nothing unlawful, and the remembrance of others than Him is not lawful; for in His remembrance is salvation, and in the remembrance of other than Him is perdition. And God knows best what is right.
