الحمدلله الذی کشف لأولیائه بواطن ملکوته، وقشع لأصفیائه سرائر جبروته، وأراق دم المحبین بسیف جلاله، وأذاق سر المشتاقین روح وصاله. هو المحیی لموات القلوب بأنوار إدراکه، والمنعش لها براحة روح المعرفة بنشر أسمائه. والصلوة علی رسوله محمد و علی آله و أصحابه. من بعده، قال الشیخ ابوالحسن علی بن عثمان بن ابی علی الجلابی، ثم الهجویری، رضی الله عنه: طریق استخارت سپردم و اغراضی که به نفس می بازگشت از دل ستردم و به حکم استدعای تو اسعدک الله قیام کردم و بر تمام کردن مراد تو از این کتاب عزمی تمام کردم، و مر این را کشف المحجوب نام کردم، و مقصود تو معلوم گشت و سخن اندر غرض تو در این کتاب مقسوم گشت و من از خداوند تعالی استعانت خواهم و توفیق اندر اتمام این کتاب، و از حول و قوت خود تبرا کنم اندر گفت و کردار و بالله العون و التوفیق.

English translation

Praise be to Allah, Who has revealed to His saints the inner aspects of His kingdom, and has unveiled to His chosen ones the secrets of His power, and has shed the blood of lovers with the sword of His majesty, and has given the innermost hearts of the longing ones a taste of the spirit of His union. He is the Giver of life to the dead hearts by the lights of His realization, and the Restorer of them by the ease of the spirit of gnosis through the manifestation of His Names. And blessings be upon His Messenger, Muhammad, and upon his Family and his Companions.

Thereafter, the Sheikh Abul Hasan Ali ibn Uthman ibn Abi Ali al-Jullabi, then al-Hujwiri, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I traversed the path of seeking divine guidance and erased from my heart the self-serving motives that returned to my ego, and I rose in accordance with your request—may Allah grant you happiness—and resolved completely to fulfill your desire regarding this book, and I named this Kashf al-Mahjub (The Revelation of the Veiled). Your purpose has become known, and the discourse concerning your objective has been divided in this book. I seek assistance and success from God Almighty in completing this book, and I disclaim all power and strength of my own in speech and action; and with Allah is help and success.
