Section 5 - Chapter

Original content

English translation

And as for what I said: 'In accordance with your request I arose, and I formed a firm resolve to complete your purpose from this book' — my meaning by that was this: you saw me to be a fit person to be questioned, and you asked me about your own case, and you sought this book from me, and your aim in that was benefit; so it inevitably became incumbent upon me to fulfill the due of your questioning. And since I did not immediately fulfill the due of your questioning in its entirety, a firm resolve was needed, and an intention to complete it, so that at the very outset of the book and with the intention of completing it, I might have discharged the obligation of answering it. And since the servant's aim, being joined to intention at the beginning of his act, is such that — even if some flaw should appear in that act — the servant is excused on account of it; and it was for this reason that the Prophet, may the peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: 'The intention of the believer is better than his deed.' Forming an intention at the outset of an act is better than beginning without intention. And intention has a mighty sovereignty in affairs and is a truthful proof; for by a single intention the servant passes from one ruling to another, without any effect appearing outwardly upon him — just as when someone for a while goes hungry without the intention of fasting, there is no reward for him in that, but when in his heart he intends to fast he becomes one of those brought near, without any outward effect appearing upon him. And likewise, just as a traveler who enters a city and stays there for a time does not become a resident until he forms the intention of residing, and when he intends residence he becomes a resident — and there are many examples like this. So intending good works at the outset of an act is the discharging of their due. And God knows best.
