Section 5 - 5 Muhammad ibn Wasi', May Allah Be Pleased with Him

Original content

English translation

And among them: the summoner of the people of spiritual struggle, and the one who stands firm in the station of contemplation, Muhammad ibn Wasi' — may Allah be pleased with him. In his time there was none like him. He had enjoyed the company of many of the Companions and the Successors, and had met a group of the earlier masters. He had a complete share in this Path — may Allah be pleased with him — and in the divine realities he had lofty breaths and perfect subtle allusions. It is related from him that he said: 'I never saw a thing without seeing Allah in it.' I saw nothing in which I did not behold the Real — and this is the station of contemplation, in which the servant, under the overwhelming force of love for the Agent, reaches such a degree that when he looks upon His act he does not see the act but sees the Agent; just as someone looking upon a form sees the One who fashioned it. The truth of this goes back to the saying of the Friend (Abraham), upon him be peace, who said of the moon, the sun, and the star: 'This is my Lord' (Qur'an 6:77). That was in a state of overwhelming longing, in which everything he saw he saw entirely by the attribute of his Beloved; for when the friends of God look, they see a world subdued by His compulsion and captive to His sovereignty, and they see this existence, beside the power of His act, as dissolved and, in the abasement of His command 'Be!', as nothing. They gaze upon it with the eye of yearning: they do not see the subdued, they see the Subduer; they do not see the object of action, they see the Agent; they do not see the created, they see the Creator. This we shall bring up in the chapter on Contemplations, if Allah the Exalted wills. And here an error befalls a group who say that this man said, 'I saw Allah in it' — which would necessitate place, division, and indwelling, and that is sheer unbelief; because place is of the genus of that which is emplaced. If someone supposes that place is created, then the emplaced must also be created; and if he supposes that the emplaced is eternal, then place too must be eternal. From this statement two corruptions arise: either the created must be called eternal, or the Creator must be called originated — and both of these are unbelief. Therefore his vision in things was in the sense of His signs, proofs, and demonstrations within things, or in the sense I first stated. In this there are subtle mysteries which I shall bring up in their proper place, if Allah wills.
