Section 6 - Chapter

English translation

And as for what I said, that 'I named this book Kashf al-Mahjub (Unveiling of the Veiled),' my purpose was that the title of the book should speak, for those possessing insight, of what is contained in the book, so that when they hear the title they know what is intended by it. Know that the whole world is veiled from the subtlety of true realization, except for the friends of God (Almighty and Glorious) and the honored ones of His court. And since this book concerns the exposition of the path of Truth, the explanation of the words of realization, and the unveiling of the veils of humanity, no other name was fitting for it. In reality, unveiling is the destruction of the veiled, just as the veil is the destruction of the unveiler; that is, just as what is near cannot endure distance, so what is distant cannot endure nearness. It is like a creature that is generated from vinegar: whatever it falls into, it dies, while what is generated from other things perishes in vinegar. To traverse the path of inner meanings is difficult except for the one who was created for it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Everyone is made ready for that for which he was created' — God (Almighty and Glorious) created each person for something and made the path to it easy for him.

But the veil is of two kinds: one is the veil of 'rayn' (rust) — we seek refuge in God from that — and this never lifts; the other is the veil of 'ghayn' (a passing film), and this lifts quickly. The explanation of this is that there is a servant whose very essence is a veil from the Truth, so that truth and falsehood are alike to him; and there is a servant whose attribute is a veil from the Truth, yet his nature and inner self continually seek the Truth and flee from falsehood.

So the essential veil, which is the 'rayn,' never lifts; and the meaning of 'rayn,' 'khatm' (sealing), and 'tab'' (impressing) is one, as God the Exalted said: 'Nay, but that which they have earned has rusted upon their hearts' (al-Mutaffifin 14). Then He made its ruling manifest and said: 'As for those who disbelieve, it is the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them; they will not believe' (al-Baqarah 6). Then He explained its cause: 'God has sealed their hearts and their hearing' (al-Baqarah 7), and He also said: 'God has impressed a seal upon their hearts' (al-Nahl 108).

And the attributive veil, which is the 'ghayn,' may at one time lift and at another not; for the transformation of the essence falls under what is strange and unprecedented, and is intrinsically impossible, whereas the transformation of an attribute, as it is, is permissible.

The masters have a subtle indication in this matter concerning the meaning of 'rayn' and 'ghayn,' as Junayd (may God's mercy be upon him) says: 'The rayn is among the abiding states, and the ghayn is among the passing thoughts.' The 'watan' (dwelling) is enduring, while the 'khatar' (passing occurrence) is transient; just as no mirror can be made from any stone, even if many polishers gather together, whereas when a mirror becomes tarnished it is made pure with a polishing tool — because darkness is essential to the stone and brightness is essential to the mirror; since the essence is enduring, that borrowed attribute has no permanence.

So I composed this book to be a polisher of the hearts that are caught in the veil of 'ghayn' while the substance of the light of Truth is present in their hearts, so that by the blessing of reading this book that veil may lift and they may truly find the way to inner meaning. But as for those whose very being has been kneaded from the denial of the Truth and the commission of falsehood, they will never find the way to the witnesses of the Truth, and from this book they will gain no benefit at all. Praise be to God for the blessing of gnosis.
