In this section Hujwiri explains why he titled his book Kashf al-Mahjub, the Unveiling of the Veiled: the name should speak for itself, so that those with inner insight grasp its purpose on hearing it. He teaches that the whole world is veiled (mahjub) from the subtlety of realization (tahqiq) except the saints and intimates of God. The core doctrine is that true unveiling (kashf) is the annihilation of the veiled, just as the veil (hijab) is the annihilation of the one who unveils (mukashif): nearness cannot endure distance and distance cannot endure nearness. He illustrates this with the creature born of vinegar that dies in any other medium, and dies when a foreign creature is placed into vinegar. Veiling and unveiling are thus framed as mutually exclusive states, grounding the book's stated aim of expounding the words of realization and lifting the veils of human nature.
