Section 4 - Chapter

Original content

English translation

And what I said, that: "I erased from my heart the self-serving desires that returned to the soul," my meaning was that in any action in which a selfish motive enters, the blessing is removed from that action, and the heart falls from the straight path into deviation and distraction. And that is not outside of two possibilities: either his desire is fulfilled, or it is not. If his desire is fulfilled, his destruction lies within it, and the key to the gate of Hell is none other than the attainment of the soul's desire. And if the desire is not fulfilled, at least he has mostly erased it from his heart, in which his salvation lies, and the key to the gate of Paradise is none other than restraining the soul from its desires, as God Almighty said: "But as for him who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination, then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge" (An-Nazi'at 40-41). And selfish motives in affairs are when the servant, in whatever he does, seeks other than the pleasure of God Almighty and the salvation of his soul from punishment. In short, there is no limit to the foolishnesses of the soul, and its hidden traps within it are not always apparent. A chapter on this meaning will appear in its appropriate place in this book, God Almighty willing.
