Original content

English translation

And among them: the master of those who trust in God, and the shaykh of the verifiers, Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Maghribi, may Allah be pleased with him. He was among the great ones and leaders of his time, and accepted in his era. He was a master and guardian of his disciples, and Ibrahim al-Khawwas and Ibrahim Shayban were both his disciples. His speech is lofty and his proofs are clear. And in tajrid (detachment) he held a complete standing. It is related from him that he said: 'I have not seen anything more just than the world: if you serve it, it serves you, and if you abandon it, it abandons you.' I have never seen anything more equitable than the world; for as long as you serve it, it serves you, and when you leave it, it leaves you; that is, as long as you seek it, it seeks you, and when you turn away from it and take up the service of God Most High, it flees from you and its thought no longer clings to your heart. So whoever truly turns away from the world becomes safe from its evil and is delivered from its affliction, God Most High willing.
