Alteration of Antibiotic Target Sites

Bacteria can develop antibiotic resistance by modifying the molecular target of an antibiotic. If the structure of the target site (such as a ribosome or a cell wall protein) is altered through mutation, the antibiotic can no longer bind effectively, thus failing to inhibit the bacterial process it was designed to disrupt.
