Efflux Pumps in Antibiotic Resistance

Efflux pumps are protein structures in the bacterial cell membrane that actively transport antibiotics and other toxic compounds out of the cell. By pumping the drug out before it can reach its target and accumulate to an effective concentration, these pumps confer resistance to a wide range of antimicrobial agents.
