An AI-Assisted Enzyme Discovery Still Needed Functional Investigation
Anthropic's 2026-09-23 early report attributes identification of array-associated reverse transcriptase (ART) systems to Claude's genomic search. The underlying enzyme had been identified previously; the claimed novelty concerned its associated DNA repeat array and accessory protein. Human scientists performed the laboratory work, and the primary function of ARTs remained under investigation. This illustrates the difference between identifying a candidate system and explaining its biological role. Initial characterization is not a demonstration of a finished programmable biotechnology. The evidence here is a first-party report with a linked preprint, not independent replication.
