Discovery, Understanding and Validation Are Different Achievements
Within systematic scientific investigation, this analytical distinction separates three achievements: discovery identifies a candidate result; understanding means being able to explain its claim, assumptions and scope; validation checks specified claims against appropriate evidence. None automatically supplies the others. OpenAI's 2026-10-26 announcement describes model manuscripts as material needing scientific understanding. Anthropic's 2026-09-23 ART report describes a newly identified system whose primary function remains under investigation. These are illustrations, not a measured comprehension deficit: the former is an institutional announcement, the latter an early first-party biological report.
