Analyzing a Shift in a City's Employment Structure

A city's economy was once centered around a large factory where most workers had stable, long-term jobs with similar pay and benefits. After the factory closed, the city's main employers became a high-tech firm offering high-paying, secure jobs with clear promotion paths for skilled engineers, and a large number of app-based service companies offering low-wage, insecure 'gig' work with no benefits. Analyze how the city's labour market has been transformed. In your analysis, describe the structure of the new market and explain the likely outcome for a former factory worker who does not have the skills required for the high-tech jobs.
